Whenever a prominent awards ceremony nears, there’s always an outcry for introducing fresh award types to recognize underappreciated efforts and satisfy the spirits of enthusiasts who have specialized interests.
A fellow writer previously argued supporting a scary games classification. It would be amazing. The same goes for strategy board titles, this being a dedicated supporter's campaign. However, I must insist when I prioritize because like all dedicated enthusiasts, I have a cast-iron argument supporting my request is the most urgent and significant. Here's the proposal: We need a category for puzzle games.
Categorizing Game Types
Classifying creative works isn't exact; it remains highly personal, and typically spark debates and end in fuzzy definitions. It's understandable that cinema institutions steer clear of genre categories. However, it represents an essential concession within the realm of gaming, showing incredible range they barely qualify as a single art form.
To recognize the complete range of interactive entertainment excellence to gain proper attention, and for games of all stripes to receive proper recognition, classification by type becomes crucial.
Existing Game Classification System
The major gaming awards currently feature award types recognizing Action, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these award types effectively encompass many game types, allowing placement for numerous titles.
Different situation exists for puzzle games. No appropriate category exists to accommodate them. Consider three of this year’s best games, all very different: structural challenges from a specific release, the pulse-pounding block-matching of another game, thought-provoking social scenarios of a third title. What category would fit them within current classifications? Nowhere, that’s where.
Recognition Challenges
Numerous examples exist of brilliant puzzle games launched regularly lacking appropriate categories during gaming ceremonies, if they accidentally match for categories like Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging Indie races.
- An iconic brain-teaser got overlooked completely in 2014
- A different innovative game was excluded that year
- Popular arranging title received no acknowledgment recently
- Limited numbers of puzzle games barely qualified for small studio or handheld classifications
Importance of Logic Titles
Frequently they represent compact experiences, but the art of the puzzle game holds tremendous importance. Well-known matching games rank among most popular titles worldwide maintaining this status for many years.
The famous puzzle experience challenges famous sandbox experiences for the title of best-selling game of all time; it additionally competes for best game of all time. Puzzle games are foundational to the art of video games, and they are in conversation with diverse game types.
Recommendation and Reasoning
Logic titles wouldn't face such difficulty. It would be easy to populate multiple candidates engaging, different, qualified experiences each ceremony simply — or rather, with difficulty, since numerous excellent numerous deserving experiences.
To emphasize again, these include experiences that otherwise have no home during prominent ceremonies. Brain-teaser creators function at the challenging frontier game development, creating some of most fundamental forms within interactive entertainment. Similar to cinema stunt performers, they merit acknowledgment. We shouldn't delay generations.
